Pictures promised from prior postings....

Paul and his good buddy Elvis......
hanging out in Nashville the day after the jazz concert.

This was taken before the concert started. It
was outside of the Nashville Symphony Hall.

Back at the hotel in Nashville. Paul had a really
terrific time and they had great seats. The level of
sound was not a problem for Paul, which has been an
area of improvement!

Paul had a lot of fun playing the guitar for James.
James is a lot like Paul in that he has a great ear and
plays the saxophone and the piano. He listens to
music often and really shows great talent. Like Paul, he
can stay focused on music for hours, whether he
is listening or playing.

Paul was playing his guitar for Jerry, Judy and me
one night and was really going to town. He was singing
also and we all had a really great time. Emma was
standing guard while Abby was on a break!

Paul received 2 postcards from Emily and Claire.
Jerry took this picture because Paul was enjoying
them so much. Paul has such a tender heart about
young kids and they love him so unconditionally.
What a blessing they are to him.

Paul and James playing scrabble.........wonder who won?

Paul wins just about every game, which is
why he always volunteers to keep score.

Love is Patient

Jon and I may now be grandparents but there is always a lesson to be learned. We have heard it said numerous times, “Be careful what you pray for”. I have to admit, that statement has not stopped me yet. I’m all out there when I pray to God!

A week ago, I was going to get the gardens weeded and Jon said he would take my mother to the eye doctor for me so that I could the gardens weeded and other things done too. We had not had a free weekend in a long time and my house and gardens showed the visible signs of neglect. So I headed out to the shin-high weeds and got started. Later, James told me that Jon was on the phone. He had been gone only 25 minutes and I was impatient that he was already calling me for something. I had to hurry and wash up and then came in to take the phone call. I was thinking, very impatiently, that I would never get anything done if I was going to have to keep answering a phone. My tone reflected my impatience as I found the directions to the doctor’s office on the internet and told them to Jon. Then I realized that I had not given him the paperwork he needed to give to the doctor, so I had to call and get the fax number for the doctor’s office. I faxed Mom’s paperwork over and then went back outside to try to get some work done. I called out to James, “Tell anyone who calls that I will return their call later this afternoon! Except for your dad…..”

I went back to the garden and was muttering to myself that I just never had the time to get things done around our house. Now mind you, God had provided an unusually clear and cool morning for me, without the usual 80% humidity and the birds were chirping away like mad. I wasn’t being bothered by mosquitos (yet!) and it had rained really hard all through the night, so the weeds were very easily pulled out of the ground. Yet I was feeling very impatient about the amount of work that needed to be done and the fact that I had been pulled away from my task. I started to pray the rosary to myself and instantly felt bad that I had taken such an impatient tone with Jon. He was doing ME a favor by taking time out of his day to handle my Mother’s doctor appointment! I asked one more time for God to grant me the patience I have been praying for all these past years.

James showed such kindness to me and he came out to help me pull the weeds. Later, I found out he had been feeling really poorly for a few days and was really tired. When I learned that he was not feeling well, I thanked him with great sincerity for coming out into the garden and working so hard. It had wiped him out since he had not been sleeping well. I told him that I wished I had shown that same patience and kindness to his dad. I mentioned that I keep praying for patience and it seemed like God was taking a LONG TIME TO ANSWER MY PRAYER. James looked at me and said, “God isn’t going to just hand you the gift of patience. He has answered your prayer by providing you many opportunities to PRACTICE the virtue of patience, whereby you will then attain patience.” Seriously folks, I looked up at him and said, “What?!! What do you mean?”
James explained to me that our prayers are answered by God in ways that are best for us. To simply hand me the virtue of patience would not be wise. How would I know what it was if I had not had to experience it first? I took a moment to dwell on his words and then laughed really hard. No wonder I have had so many tough years lately……………in fact, they started about the time I was adamant in my request for more patience in my life. I thought that by praying with a very sincere heart I would finally get that great gift of patience! How could I have been so mistaken in my belief? How did I miss the insightful lesson that James just explained to me? I must have been “hurrying about my business!” Then James said, “Be careful what you pray for Mom.” Another lesson learned. The funny thing is, hearing him say ‘be careful what you pray for’ only made me want to pray to God to allow me to learn EVERYTHING I would need to get to heaven!! Bring on the practice of Kindness, Patience, Charity and Love, with lot of Wisdom to help me know how to use these gifts!!!

I could hardly wait for Jon to get home. (But I waited with patience……)
As soon as he walked in I apologized for my tone of voice and the careless way I had treated him on the phone. He smiled at me and said he was wondering about that, since he was doing me the favor. I then shared with him what James had told me. Jon was equally amazed at the explanation and we wondered how we had not ever really heard it before. We both missed the class ‘Patience 101’! He and I talked about all the missed opportunities and we were actually excited to start out with our new understanding and see how many ‘tests’ we could pass. On Sunday, as we drove to a church 45 minutes away, there were plenty of opportunities as we drove out on interstate 285 (anyone who lives close to Atlanta will know it is the perfect place to hone your skills in patience). We actually had a lot of fun with it. Each time either of us would stop short the urge to say something critical or judgemental, we would look at each other and smile. I wonder if God had finally gotten tired of watching us fail all His great opportunities all these years and decided we needed to repeat the class?? Praise be to God – I finally GET IT. Now I am praying for the strength to remain strong in my convictions to attain the gifts He intends for me.

We went to Mass at St. Frances de Sales for the Tridentine Mass. It sure brought back a lot of memories and it was such a reverent and peaceful time for me. Jon really enjoyed being there. It was a bit more confusing for him since he is a convert to Catholicism. They did have prayer books that we used to follow along. The whole Mass was in Latin, and we were familiar with only a couple of those prayers. We had attended many Masses where Fr. Jack Durkin would pray parts of the Mass in Latin, so that helped us recognize the words and we could pray along. We had been invited to this Mass by Geneva Baran. She and Paul were dating before his accident and she has been so good to Paul since that time. He doesn’t really remember much of the time he spent with her prior to the accident, only bits and pieces. He really enjoys her company and has said on numerous occasions that it makes him very sad to think about how hurt all of this must have made her – to love someone and then not even be remembered. I was so happy to learn he did remember her mother, Chris, when he saw her this past Sunday. It was a very peaceful day for us and we were so happy to see Geneva and her mother again. We met the young man she is now dating and he could not have been more kind and gracious to all of us. May God bless them both!

Jerry took Paul to a concert a week ago……in Nashville! They drove up early Thursday to attend the concert by Diana Krall. She is a jazz pianist and also sings very well. They spent the night at a hotel that had a very large pool, so Paul was able to swim both days. They did some sightseeing on Friday and then drove back home. Paul was so excited about the concert and the fact that he had taken another road trip! Jerry has been telling Paul to keep working hard at his recovery so that they can plan these kinds of trips and use them as a goal for Paul to work towards. Paul even worked longer during the days before his trip to Nashville so that he could take that Friday off. It really helps him when there is a goal ahead of him and one that he has helped set.

We are going to meet with the people at Shepherd Pathways on Tuesday. This will be an important step to help Paul reach his goal of returning to college. He will benefit from their help this time because he is not so ‘vague’ in his mind. He was experiencing the onset of hydrocephalus the last time he was there (about 18 months ago) and he did not really gain much while there. They had to dismiss him from the program since he was not responding very well. We are praying that they will be a lot more helpful this time around. They will also be able to do a psychological evaluation to help us know where Paul needs the most help.

This past Saturday was our monthly Rosary Walk around Stone Mountain. It is a 5 mile walk and we pray all the Mysteries of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. We pray for numerous intentions and we always include all of you! This time though, Paul joined us in prayer for the full 5 miles! We thought he would walk 1-2 miles, but he stayed the course and finished it. He also brought his dog, Abby. This was the first time he has been able to do this. He is really ‘raising the bar’ for himself! He had a pretty bad headache when he started (about a 6 on a scale of 1 – 10), but said that it had not gotten worse so he really wanted to finish what he started.

“In time of trail it is of great profit to us patiently to endure for God’s sake, for the Lord says: “By patient endurance you will win life for yourselves.” He did not say by your fasting, or your solitude or silence, or your singing of psalms, although all of these are helpful in saving your soul. But he said: “By patient endurance” in every trial that overtakes you, and in every affliction, whether this be insolent and contemptuous treatment or any kind of disgrace, either small or great, whether it be bodily weakness, or the belligerent attacks of Satan, or any trial whatsoever caused either by other people or by evil spirits.

The apostle writes: “With patient endurance we run the race of faith set before us.”
This is the queen of virtues, a haven of tranquility. It is peace in time of war, calm in rough waters, safety amidst treachery and danger. It makes those who practice it stronger than steel. Not even the host of evil spirits, nor the dark array of hostile powers, nor the devil himself standing by with all his armies and devices will have power to injure the man or woman who has acquired this virtue through Christ.” ( Saint Nilus of Ancyra -430 AD)

Amen, brother.

May God bless you for patiently praying with great perseverance for our family.
Love,
Jon and Rebecca

Do You Want to Know A Secret?

CHILDREN…..what a beautiful gift from God!

This past week brought back 2 beautiful memories for me, thanks to my nephews, James and Griffin. James is the son of Mary Beth (my sister) and Mike. Griffin is the son of Kelly and Keith (brother).

On Friday night, I could not stand the suspense any longer and I called Keith to see how Griffin’s baseball game was going. It was no ordinary game, which is why I couldn’t stand the suspense! I’ve told you a number of times before, I hate suspense and with any story that is suspenseful, I still read the last chapter in a book right after I read the first chapter and I fast forward to the end of a movie to make sure who is still alive. Needless to say, I pretty much avoid the ‘thriller’ category. So, since I had not heard from anyone about Griffin’s game, I called my brother at 10:45 PM to get the score. Keith answered and he said that Griffin’s team was leading 13-0 in the Naperville City Championship Game! There were only 2 more ‘outs’ and the game would be over. He had so much joy in his voice as he was telling me he had his bottle of “sparkling cider” ready to pour over the heads of the players and the coaches. The parents were thrilled that this 10-12 yr old league had managed to be the top team out of 50 other teams in the city. I could not have been happier for them. Every parent wants their kids to have those awesome moments in their lives. I was so proud of my brother when he told me the day before that he hoped that Griffin would win, but he also said that if they didn’t win, he felt it would be a very important lesson for Griffin about how to lose with grace. I know from experience that that is a tough lesson for young boys to learn. I thanked God that Griffin had the parents he has – they would help him learn that lesson with so much love. I told Keith I would pray that Griffin would get to experience the joy of winning such a huge game. My sister Bev and her daughter Courtney went to Hobby Lobby and made a big poster board card for Griffin and decorated it with scrap book decorations. It was a terrific and personalized card for Griffin. Jerry brought Paul by the office so that Paul could sign it and those who were not on hand to sign it emailed messages that Bev printed and pasted to the back of the poster board. She then rolled it up and sent it overnight to Griffin so he would receive it on the day of his big game. We wanted him to know he had our best wishes and prayers for his team to win. He really enjoyed receiving that surprise in the mail. I told him I would pray for ‘Angels in the Outfield!” Heaven heard our prayers!
Way to go Griffin – we are really proud of you. Thanks be to God for allowing my dear nephew to experience the joy of winning his Big Game!

The next morning I told Paul about Griffin and he was so happy. We spent some time talking about all the fun we used to have when the boys played baseball. It was so much fun remembering some of the happiest times we spent with our sons. Paul’s nickname back then was ‘Pablo to the Wablo’. When he played T-ball, he almost always hit the ball to the fence in the outfield. It was Uncle KEITH who first called him that. Paul still loves baseball and can tell you the names of most players on most teams during the 1990’s.

Heaven heard the prayers for my other nephew too. Last week, James woke my sister Mary Beth at around 2:30 A.M. He told her that he didn’t feel very well, that his stomach hurt. Mary Beth noted that he had a fever and took his temperature and it was a little over 99 degrees. She told him that he probably had a stomach flu and had him lay down by her. His stomach was making the noises a mother recognizes as the beginning of trouble, so Mary Beth took him to the bathroom for the expected to happen. He was now shaking really hard, due to the fever. Mary Beth took his temperature again and he was now at 104 degrees. She was very shaken about how quickly his fever had worsened. James was shaking almost uncontrollably and Mary Beth started to fill the tub with cool water to help keep the fever from climbing higher. At this point in time, James did something that you would not expect from a 10 yr old who is feeling so poorly. He started to pray to Jesus. He asked Jesus to help him not shake so hard and to please help him feel better. He talked to Jesus with the faith of a child. Mary Beth told James that he was right to pray to Jesus for help and she too asked Jesus to help them. She put James into the tub and he was so hot to the touch that she really became frightened about him going into convulsions. He vomited and so Mary Beth emptied the water and as she was cleaning up the tub, her neighbor came to help her after receiving a call from Mary Beth just a few minutes earlier. James was now rigid and not moving and was turning purple. Mary Beth said she had to fight to keep from becoming hysterical and she was praying for Jesus to help her. Her friend had brought her own son to help them and they filled the sink with ice and water and dunked towels into the icy water and then laid them on James. His temperature was now over 106 degrees according to the thermometer they had under his arm. As the towels started to cool his body down, James finally showed a tiny sign that he was responding. His eyes fluttered open momentarily. At this point the ambulance arrived and they helped stabilize James. On the way to the hospital he was hallucinating. Mary Beth was very frightened that he might have suffered brain damage. Hours later, the ER physician said that the temperature was down to 99 degrees and that while they could not say positively why the fever had shot up so quickly, they felt that James had a viral infection and they were going to discharge him. They did say that James might not have made it had Mary Beth not taken the steps she had in keeping his body cooled down. Mary Beth said that he was still not acting like he normally does and she didn’t want to take him home yet. They continued to monitor him and he had an IV going. Later, a nurse walked into the room and James called out to her, “Knock, Knock”. That was Mary Beth’s sign that he was back. He loves knock-knock jokes and is always telling them to everyone. She smiled and knew he was going to be okay. When she told me about all of this, the only thing that I stayed focused on was that he had prayed right before going unconscious. His instinct to pray really impacted me. I told Mary Beth that it immediately made me go back to the moment when James came up behind me as I knelt before the crucifix in our hallway at home. I was about ready to lose control of my emotions after looking into Paul’s bedroom and seeing his sandals by his chair and his shirt tossed on his bed. We had stopped at the house to get phone chargers and a couple other things I knew we would need at the hospital. It was going to be a long night and everyone was rushing to the hospital after receiving our calls that Paul had just been in a very serious accident. I started to cry and James took my hand. He said “It will be alright Aunt Becky.” I asked him if he would help me pray. I told him that Jesus loved the prayers of little children. He looked up at the crucifix and he prayed with a very sincere heart and a calmness I couldn’t help but notice. He said, “Please Jesus, help Paully not hurt and please help him get better really soon. Please help Paully Jesus.” He smiled at me and I thanked him for praying. We then prayed a Hail Mary and we left for the hospital. Later, while James, Mary Beth and my son James were praying in the hospital chapel, little James looked up and then said very calmly to Mary Beth, “my angel just went to Paully.” Needless to say, it was an amazing thing to hear him say that out loud! Then, as he was being driven back to our home many hours later, Mary Beth told me that he all of a sudden said, “My angel just came back and Paully is going to be alright. He has lots of angels in his room!” I have shared this story with a lot of people because it is the perfect example of how we need to be like children in our prayers and our trust in God!

It is NO SECRET that God hears our prayers and will answer them in a way that is best for us.

I go back to my first statement about how children are beautiful gifts from God and I will now share with you what has been a secret since April, 2007. Jon and Marie have been blessed by God and are expecting their first child in December! We will have our first grandchild and we have thanked God every day for the joy that news has brought into our lives at a time that we needed it. I don’t know who was more joyous about being an uncle – Paul, James or Michael. We got the news while Paul was still in the hospital and had to have the 3 surgeries in 3 days. God must have known we were all pretty much wiped out at that point and He sent the best gift we could have received. Jon and Marie wanted to wait until they were sure everything was going well and the baby was doing fine before we shared this news with everyone. Just think, all of you will have only 5 months of waiting instead of 9 to find out what God will send our family – a boy or a girl. Wish I could fast-forward to the end to see! Back to more suspense in my life...........

A great joy came to me while I was praying the first rosary after they told us. I was actually offering up my intentions for my Grandchild! I realized with amazement that I had been able to take my mind off Paul for a good while as I day dreamed about holding my grandchild. In these past months, I have spent a whole lot of time daydreaming and shopping! Bev and I went to the store the week after we found out and sent off a number of baby items to Jon and Marie. We are having so much fun together, since Bev’s daughter Becca is also expecting a baby…………….any second ! She was due 7/22 and we are praying for her to have an uncomplicated birth. She has been to the hospital this past Saturday, but was sent home. If the contractions don’t start again soon, the doctor may have to induce labor as Becca is starting to show some signs of stress to her body. She has had hard labor pains on and off for over a week and is physically worn down. As is her husband Zack. Please keep them ALL in your prayers, along with Jon, Marie and Baby Fidero. Thank you, thank you , thank you.

Dear God, you know our needs before we speak them, please heed your children’s prayer.

Blessings to everyone,
Love,
Jon and Rebecca

p.s. As always, pictures will follow……smile.

Pictures of our peaceful, blessed retreat

This is the main house that can be rented at the
Queen of Peace property. There is a large barn
that is converted into apartments where we stayed
which sits behind the main house. The property
is owned by a woman named Maria. After her husband
died, she moved her from Nevada and purchased this
property to make it into a place for the people who
make a pilgrimage to the shrine.

Jon and Paul in front of the main doors into the
Blessed Sacrament Shrine. These bronze doors
show the scenes of the Seven Joys and the
Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This is the main statue as you walk up to the
Shrine doors. It is the child Jesus, and serving
as a symbol of the eagor love of our God, he
offers His heart to all who approach him.

The front entrance of the Shrine. The light posts
leading to the shrine are in the shape of a shepherd's
staff. There is a long line of them on both sides. The
top of the cross was sheared off in a storm and it was
then left as a Tau Cross. Mother Angelica saw this
as no accident and left it unrepaired. The Tau Cross
is the sign our Lord had His angel mark on upon the
foreheads of the faithful people. It is also a symbol of
spiritual renewal in the Church.

The Castle San Miguel which sits across the piazza
from the Shrine. It is to call to mind the valor of
the knights and the courage of the saints in times past.

This is a side view from the parking lot. It is truly
a beautiful place to visit.

We are following Pat down the long 2 mile road that
leads directly into the Shrine. It sits high up in the
mountains north of Birmingham. It was cloudy,
but the view was beautiful, The long entrance helps
to quiet your mind as you enter the Shrine's 380 acres.

Pictures (continued)

This is the barn that was remodeled and turned into
4 apartments. We were on the bottom left apartment
named Padre Pio.

The area outside of our apartment. The grounds are
beautifully maintained and all the gardening is done
by Maria. She also does all the cleaning and preparing
of the main home and apartments as her way of serving
Our Lord.

Maria had this was the sign on the door to our apartment
when we first arrived. God did bless us! Thank you Maria
for a wonderful place to stay and a very warm welcome.

A huge thank you to Pat and Carol for bringing us
to the shrine.

The Joyful Visitation

(I'm working on the pictures! Will get them posted soon)

You may have to take a couple of days to read this posting. There is just so much to tell.
Get a cup of coffee, tea or juice and enjoy.

About 4 weeks ago Paul and I were at the adoration chapel at Corpus Christi Church. I had given him a book to look at that showed pictures of The Blessed Sacrament Shrine in Hanceville, Alabama. I had looked at the book numerous times before and thought how awesome it would be to go see this shrine that was built due to Mother Angelica, of the EWTN TV station. Her story is so awesome and I admit, since we removed cable TV from our home years and years ago, we knew about EWTN, but have not really watched it except on a couple of occasions while we were out of town and staying in hotels. We were familiar with Mother Angelica most especially after Raymond Arroyo was a guest speaker at the Eucharistic Congress here in Atlanta a few years ago. I am mentioning all of this to let you know how unfamiliar we were with the Shrine (other than seeing pictures in the book about the Shrine) and the few other occasions we were exposed to the life of Mother Angelica.

As I mentioned, I had looked at the pictures in that book and then showed it to Paul. He said he would really like to try to get to that Shrine. I was not sure when we could go, since before Topsail Island vacation, he was not well. I told him we would try to get him over to the Shrine by summer’s end.

In the last week of June, Jon and I were at 6:30 AM Mass and a woman who comes to that Mass also was waiting for me as I got out of my car to go into church. Carol (Garrison) said that she doesn’t usually approach people in this manner, but in her prayers recently, it kept coming to her that Paul should visit the Blessed Sacrament Shrine and so she just wanted to mention it to me in case it was something we should know. I looked at her in astonishment and told her that in the prior week, I had just told Paul that we would try to get him there and he said he really wanted to go see it! How odd that she would mention this to me and I told her that I would make a huge effort to get him there. As I walked into church I recited the prayer we say after every decade of the rosary (taught to us by Patty Palmquist, originator of the Rosary Walkers).

“Oh Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine,
All praise and all thanksgiving, be every moment thine.”

I pictured the monstrance that the Blessed Sacrament is held in at the adoration chapel at Corpus Christi and thanked God for the gift of His son Jesus in the Eucharist. How wonderful are His works. I knew that we were meant to have a ‘joyful visitation’.

I wasn’t sure when we would go, but just left it up to God. If Paul was meant to go, He would arrange it. A couple of days later, Carol’s friend, Pat Denton called me. I knew who she was because she had offered a long time ago to come help watch Paul when I went back to work. I didn’t remember this (not a surprise, since my memory is not so good - smile), but she also brought dinner to our home during that time when meals were being delivered for 3 months. I had also spoken briefly to her on the occasions when I would see her at Mass or adoration. She called to tell me that Carol had mentioned to her how Paul and the Blessed Sacrament shrine had been coming up in her prayers and so Pat said she would be glad to work out the arrangements of the visit to the Shrine. She had been there numerous times before and while she wasn’t anyone important, she knew a couple of other people who were and she was going to try to set up a visit with the cloistered nuns at the Shrine. She knew about Paul and wanted to have the nuns pray over him. She said we needed to spend time praying about that part.

She asked if we could go the first weekend of July for First Friday and First Saturday. I immediately remembered that I had told the extended family that if Paul was well enough, we would come to Topsail Island since they would all be there. They really wanted to see Paul, so I told Pat what I had promised to my own family. She said she would check to see if there was another weekend we could go. She knew there was a place where we might be able to stay, but didn’t know if there were any open weekends this summer. Pat called me back to see if we could go on 7/13 and 7/14. I said if Paul was well, it was a ‘GO’. She then mentioned how wonderful that would be since the 13th was the feast of Rosa Mystica. (The 13th of each month is to be remembered as a day of the forgiveness of offences to Our Lord from the souls consecrated to God. This message was given by Our Blessed Mother to Pierina Gillio while she was praying before the statute of Rosa Mystica in 1983.) I told Pat that that was so amazing because we were allowed to have the traveling statute of Rosa Mystica in our home in the year 2000 – during the week of Christmas! I said that it appears that Our Mother wanted us to remember that. Pat asked that we pray until that time so that we might possibly be able to visit with the nuns.

Paul came back from Topsail in such high spirits and with a positive attitude, so I called Pat and told her I was confident we were going to make the trip. We made our plans to meet at 4 PM and would leave Atlanta. Friday came and Jon found out he had to stay later than he thought and so we didn’t get to leave until 6:45 PM. We encountered terrible traffic due to 2 accidents along the way, (not serious ones, thank God) and road construction. It is normally a 4 hour trip, with a stop for dinner as part of that time frame. It took us 6 hours and so we did not arrive until 12:30 AM. We were exhausted! We had to get up at 5:30 AM to get ready for the 7:00 AM Mass over at the Shrine. Yes indeed, a little sacrifice does a body good!

I was concerned Paul would not do very well since we would have about 5 hours sleep. He had not slept on the trip over. He was the first one up Saturday morning, ready to take his medicine and get ready to go! He did say he felt a little unbalanced, so he held onto Jon’s shoulder for a while that morning. We went to Mass and I could not believe the beauty of the Shrine. The altar is glorious and the monstrance that holds the Eucharist is 8 feet tall and is above the altar. The Poor Clare nuns are cloistered so they are behind the wall of the altar but they can see the Blessed Sacrament from their side. They sang throughout the Mass and in my mind it was like hearing angels from heaven.
After Mass, we were able to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and from behind the ornate wall of the altar, the nuns lead everyone in the recitation of the rosary. Afterwards, we walked around and got some pictures, then went back to where we were staying.

The place where we stayed is named Queen of Peace. It was purchased by a woman, Maria, who came from Las Vegas after her husband died. She named it Queen of Peace after a visit to Medjugorje. She turned the old barn into 4 beautiful living quarters. We stayed in the Padre Pio apartment. There is a main house and an addition to the main house with the names of St. Gabriel the Archangel, St. Michael the Archangel and St. Raphael the Archangel, along with Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima (the main house that can be rented also) and St. Francis. The grounds are just beautiful and it could not be a more quiet and serene place to come back to. There are little areas where you can sit and reflect or pray or visit. It is so beautifully maintained too.

We had breakfast and then went back to the Shrine for a very special event. The nuns had been given Paul’s blog site to check out and we were given permission to meet with them in their parlor. We were thrilled about this invitation and we met them at 11 AM. There were about 4 nuns who came into the parlor, but they had to stay behind the wrought iron wall that divided the room in two. As we told them about Paul’s recovery and stories about all those who prayed for him and continue to pray for him and the blessings and the relics that he had been touched with, we noticed that a few more had entered the room. Pretty soon, there were a number of nuns in the room. They were so happy to hear that so many people had prayed for Paul and also loved the story about Fr. Kevin Peek bringing the zucchetto of John Paul II and his putting it on Paul’s head while he celebrated a Mass in Paul’s room. They asked a lot of questions and then they said that they would keep Paul in their prayers. One of the nuns said she will pray most especially for Paul’s vocation to the priesthood, if it be God’s will. The Mother Vicar left the room and came back with a bottle of blessed St. Raphael oil with a prayer to be said when we used it on Paul. She also gave us the name of 2 priests who have the gift of healing. We were told that they had tried to get Mother Angelica to come also, but she was not well. We knew how awesome all of this was, because cloistered nuns do not meet with visitors to the Shrine. They are in seclusion. This was a once in a lifetime occasion for us and we were in awe the whole time! One of the nuns is not a cloistered nun, as her duties require her to do the shopping and the errands for the nuns. She is also in charge of the Novitiates. She was on our side of the room. She said she was so touched by Paul’s story and she held his hands and said she would keep him in her prayers, but she asked him to most especially keep her in his prayers. She then gave Paul a purple piece of paper. It was folded over to make a frame around a little white piece of cloth. She handed it to Paul and said that it was a piece of John Paul II’s zucchetto that she kept with her. She told Paul she wanted him to have it. We could not believe she would give away something so dear to her! Paul took it and thanked her with great sincerity. I stood by speechless (now there’s a miracle for you!). I just looked at Pat, Jon and Carol with a huge smile on my face. A short time later we walked out of the parlor. We got out into the hallway and just broke out into joyous conversation and laughing. We could not believe we had been allowed this meeting. I hugged Pat and Carol and thanked them so much for making all of this possible. Pat told Paul that he was in very good hands since he had so many very holy women praying for him! Paul said, “Don’t I know it.”

At 2:00 PM we attended the healing service celebrated by Fr. Joseph. Everyone present was blessed with the Eucharist and afterwards, Fr. Joseph talked to us and blessed us again. He is a musician too, and said he would pray for Paul to recover so he could play his music again.

We went back to Queen of Peace and had dinner with the realtor who sold the 300+ acres to Mother Angelica. Barbara shared her story of conversion as a Southern Baptist to Catholicism and how she helped Mother Angelica find the property for the shrine. She said that she had no idea that Mother Angelica had only $200 at the time she signed the contract on the property! I asked her if she had known that, would she have taken the time to drive Mother Angelica around. She said absolutely not. She had no idea there was no money with which to buy the property. (I also heard on Sunday, that Mother Angelica did not have any money to pay for the huge satellite dish that was delivered to EWTN. The man was ready to get paid and in the moments following, Mother Angelica received a call from a donor and the money was wired to her account and she was then able to pay the man who delivered the first of a number of satellite dishes so EWTN could broadcast their programs to other areas.) When it came time for Mother Angelica to pay for the property, she had been contacted by a private donor and the necessary funds were there! There were only 5 anonymous donors to the shrine and they remain unknown to this day. The amount of faith Mother Angelica has is beyond words. When I listened to these stories, I realized I had a long way to go in my growth as a faithful servant. But I am so encouraged to work so much harder at it! The awesome faith stories of the realtor and the owner of Queen of Peace and so many others who are connected to the building of this shrine are incredible.

The shrine sits in the middle of the mountains north of Birmingham and there not much more than farms or small homes. It is such a serene and beautiful setting. The story of the beginnings of this shrine is too long to tell. I do know that I will be purchasing books about Mother Angelica to learn more of her faith story. God and one woman began EWTN and the Blessed Sacrament Shrine that followed years later. Awesome story.

After dinner, we drove back over to the shrine for adoration. The shrine is so beautifully lit at night. Inside the sanctuary, it is very softly lit and you can’t help but notice the Blessed Sacrament up above the high wall of the altar. We prayed for about an hour. It was so inspiring to watch the young friars, novitiates and other young men and women who are discerning their vocations as they came in and out of the shrine. They all had this beauty of fresh young faces and a beautiful reverence about them. Paul still is talking about the young men who were altar servers. He said he really enjoyed watching them and how reverent they were. We stopped at the very large statue of our Blessed Mother Mary and as I knelt and looked up, I felt so much that I was truly being looked at by Our Lady herself. It made me well up with tears as I poured my heart out to her like I would if she were there holding my hand. It was so moving a moment for me.
How could I possibly begin to thank Her for all Her intercessions all my life? I could not, so once again, I offered up my family and my life, asking Her to keep leading us to be loving servants of God.

The next morning, we got up at 5:30 AM again. And you guessed it, Paul was first up again. No surprises there. And once again, after Mass we were asked to come back to a different area, where we were told to meet with the Mother Vicar. We held our breath as we anticipated a possible meeting with Mother Angelica. The Mother Vicar was there, along with another nun and they told us that Mother Angelica was still not very well. But we were told that she listened with great interest to Paul’s story and she took her rosary and kissed it and gave it to the nun to give to Paul.. This nun then handed the rosary to Paul. I could hardly speak except to say we were so thankful for this most beautiful gift. Paul was amazed as well and took the rosary carefully into his hands. Then Mother Vicar reached out and took one of Paul’s hands and said that she too was a musician and she wanted Paul to come back and play the guitar or the cello for them. She played the clarinet and she said it would be so wonderful to hear Paul play his music. He told her he would try very hard and would come back. She said she would pray for him and asked him to please remember her in his prayers. She also provided the information needed to contact the priests who had the gift of healing. We spent about 15 minutes talking with the Mother Vicar and the other nun and I hated when the time came for us to leave. I felt so blessed to be in the presence of these very holy women. I knew it was a very special moment for Paul and all of us to be given this privilege.

We walked out into the hallway and Sr. Mary, the nun who gave Paul the small piece of the zucchetto, walked up to us and told us the most amazing story of her grand-nephew, Connor. He was born with a very rare disease and is the 34th person to be born with Marshall-Smith Syndrome. She told us how the baby’s mother was so devastated by the baby’s condition. He was not expected to live as most die of respiratory failure. He has a trachea and a feeding tube and needs a lot of care. Since he requires so much care, Sr. Mary said it would not be possible for him to be flown down to the Shrine for a blessing from Mother Angelica. She decided that she would pray for a way to make that happen. As she prayed, she had the remembrance of a doctor she had known for a long time. She knew he had a private jet. She said she didn’t really feel comfortable calling him and ask for so large a favor. She prayed very hard about it and after 2 days, the doctor happened to call her! He and his wife were going to be visiting the shrine and hoped to visit with Sr. Mary. When they arrived, they talked for awhile about the work he is doing to help stop abortion and then his wife (who is almost deaf) asked Sr. Mary what could they do for her. Sr. Mary was so amazed by the question and so she mentioned the issue of trying to get her grand-nephew to the shrine. The doctor immediately agreed and arrangements were made to fly Connor and his mother to Mother Angelica. Sr. Mary said that when Mother Angelica held baby Connor, it was like seeing 2 saints looking at each other. The baby even smiled. Then Sr. Mary handed Paul the picture of baby Connor being held by Mother Angelica and asked him to pray for a miraculous healing from the Infant Child Jesus. We all looked at the picture and it was beautiful. She told Paul to keep that picture and another one of her, Connor and his mother. She asked Paul to remember them all in his prayers! She talked about how the baby is a victim soul and that Paul too was a victim soul. Their lives were spent in pain and suffering for the atonement of the sins of this world. Again, I was struck speechless and was in awe of everything that had taken place. Another moment where we were so honored by the nuns and the time spent with us all. As we were leaving, Sr. Mary said she too will pray for Paul’s vocation.

It was so hard to leave the shrine. The peace and tranquility we felt cannot be put into words. Because of these dear women, Pat Denton and Carol Garrison, we were able to receive so many blessings. Our heartfelt thanks go out to them. They will be in our prayers too!!

The pictures don’t capture the beauty of the shrine. No one is allowed to take pictures of the sanctuary as there is perpetual adoration. I invite you to visit this place if you ever get near enough. It was well worth the 6 hours it took us to get there!

We had the statue of Rosa Mystica at Christmas time - the time we remember the birth of our Lord Jesus. The first statue we saw at the shrine is the Child Jesus. We were told that it was the Child Jesus who lead Mother Angelica on her journey.
So it is, through our child Paul and the intercession of Mary’s love and prayers, we have been led to a far greater awareness of the gifts of our Catholic faith.

May all of you receive abundant blessings for the prayers you have offered up for our family and the many kind and gracious acts of love shown to us. You remain in our daily prayers. May the Child Jesus bring the healings you need to grow in faith, hope and love.

Peace in Christ,
Jon and Rebecca

I was able to get to Mass last Friday for First Friday. I checked out the morning Mass time and it was at 9:00 AM. A lot of the family were leaving the island that day, so I really wanted to go so I could say prayers for their safe travel. I drove over to Hampstead, NC and went to
St. Jude's. I was glad that it was St. Jude's because Paul has recently been praying to St. Jude, since he is the saint associated with impossible cases. Paul really hopes for a full recovery of his paralysis and the ringing in his ears to stop, along with his headaches, of course. I decided I would thank St. Jude while I was at Mass for his intercession. There were 2 cars in the parking lot and I thought that it might be because it was the 4th of July week and people would be on vacation. The real reason was that Mass that day had been moved to 9:30 AM. That suited me just fine as there was a beautiful courtyard area with some benches and a very large statute of Blessed Mary. I walked out there and sat on the bench that was in the shade. The wind was blowing at a fair rate, which made it all the more pleasant for me. I was noticing all the flowers around the garden and then noticed the shadow of a butterfly on the ground. I glanced over my shoulder, smiling because one would appear at so perfect a moment. I looked for it in the flowering bush behind me but could not find it. I looked at the ground again to see the shadow and there it was, plain as day. There was a butterfly somewhere on a branch on that bush. I stood up and looked for the butterfly and still could not find it. I looked back at the ground to try to figure out its location and the shadow of the butterfly was still there. After walking over to the right a little more, I finally found the butterfly and it was a beautiful orange Monarch. It was clinging to the flowery branch and the wind started to pick up more. The butterfly hung on and was able to cling to the flower even though it was being tossed back and forth by the wind. I thought for sure the wind would cause the butterfly to depart and fly away, but the butterfly stayed attached to the branch until the wind died down a little. Then it fluttered to another branch and once again, the wind picked up and tossed the branches back and forth, with the butterfly hanging on for the ride. Finally, it flew past my head and down the side of the building and out of sight. Smiling once again, I thought to myself, that is just what happens when you become aware of God's love. You know that you have to hold onto Him for dear life during the difficult times and after He fills you with the strength to go on, then you venture out again. There is nothing sweeter than His love. I understood more clearly, what a kind woman at our church once told me. After her daughter had died in her early 20's, she felt very angry at God. It took her a while to come back to Him and have the faith and courage to say yes once again that His will be done in her life. She said there were times when she had to just 'cling to His coat tails flying in the wind' as life brought its struggles and strife. But cling she did and He always gave her the strength to go on. Just like the butterfly clinging to the sweetness of the flower in the gusting breeze, drawing strength from it.

As I have sat here remembering that morning, my thoughts just flashed on the fact that I have a beautiful Monarch butterfly flag flying outside of our home. I was so excited when I first saw it, because I had been looking specifically for a butterfly flag all throughout Spring. You'll never guess where I found it. In the gift shop of Carolina Medical Center! It was on our last appointment there, when everything seemed to be going wrong and Paul had really been put through the ringer. We were leaving after the last test on the second day we were there and Paul wanted to stop to get Jerry a very tiny candy bar. He said he wanted to hand it to him and say that the size of the candy bar reflected just how much fun the trip had been. He would tell Jerry, "this is about how much fun you missed." He was chuckling as he picked out the smallest size candy bar he could find. I found a tiny box of Junior mints that had 3 little pieces in it and that was my contribution to the gift bag. As I was waiting in line I noticed a box of flags and there was the exact one I had hoped I would find someday. I told Paul that I was definitely going to purchase it so I would have one fond memory of all our stays at that hospital. It would be something more pleasing to hold onto in my mind than the pain I had watched him endure so many times. Funny how I was acting just like that butterfly I saw last Friday. I needed to hang onto something more pleasing. I have to tell you, this is not what I was thinking about when I started to write this blog today. I am glad it came to mind though, because it has also made me reflect on the fact that Paul is continuing to come out of his cocoon and I can hardly wait to see him fly.

He is really heading in that direction too. He has been doing so many more things than last month. After we got home on Saturday, Judy and I were talking about all the things Paul had done on our vacation. She was so happy to hear about it and said that Jerry was going to make sure Paul kept it up. That is why he got the workout equipment in place and the entertainment center and TV set up along with the CD player in that area. Paul could listen to music or watch TV as he exercised, making it a more pleasant experience. I mentioned that Paul and I had talked about some of the ways he could improve in the area of independence and Paul was going to start doing his own laundry. I told him to add something new every few days that he could do to be more independent. As Judy and I were talking, Paul started to walk back to Jerry's and he actually jogged up the hill to the house. Judy had a very big smile on her face as she saw how improved Paul was after his trip to the beach.

Saturday evening we were getting ready to leave Jerry's house and I mentioned to Paul that we were going to visit some friends the next day and Paul said he could not go. He had called a friend from high school and had made a date with her to go to lunch and a movie. After that, they might go out to dinner too. She was a friend that he had some music classes with and he recently had been in touch with her. He had called her sometime on Saturday and had set up the get together on his own. I stopped dead in my tracks when he told me he could not go with Jon and me. The reason why is what totally surprised me. I was literally shocked as he casually mentioned his plans. As if he always calls friends from high school and goes out. Since the accident, he has only done what was planned for him. He pretty much waits for us to plan his day. I looked back at Jon and he was just as stunned. We asked Paul all about his plans and laughed when Jerry said he had shown the same response when Paul told him earlier. Wonders never cease!

Earlier in the evening, Paul also played the guitar a lot longer than usual. He played 3 full songs and sang too. They were songs he and Jon used to play while they were in high school, which were written by the popular band, Smashing Pumpkins. ( I wonder where that name came from!) Judy, Jerry and I were all standing there watching him, enjoyng the fact that he was playing so much and so well. He remembered them all, which totally amazed me, since he said he doesn't play much because he can't remember his music. He certainly remembered these 3. Great playing Paul!

On Sunday, Paul was up and standing outside waiting for Jon to pick him up at 7:30 AM. He had gotten up without anyone calling him. After Mass, I asked if he was going to come by to eat breakfast and he said no, he wanted to get ready for his day with his friend, Leah. That evening, Jon and I walked over to Jerry's to see how Paul's day went and he and Leah were playing cards, so we joined them. We all left about an hour later. Jerry told me the next day that on Sunday night, Paul said goodnight to him and was heading upstairs. Jerry called out to him about getting his lunch ready for the next day. As Paul continued up the stairs he responded, "just fix my usual". Jerry said he came to the stairs and told Paul pleasantly that it would be a good thing for him to take part in that job. They could get their lunches ready at the same time and it would be a big help to Jerry if Paul did his own. Paul came back down and did it with no complaints. He even got his pills into baggies and labeled them. He then went on to bed.

He was sound asleep when I went to get him Monday morning, so we had to dash out of the house. He did it in record time though and even said he was sorry for making me rush around. He stayed at work for 6 straight hours - 9 until 3. He said he actually worked pretty hard too. He was still feeling great when I picked him up and he was joking around with Lisa as we left.

Later that night, Jerry called to tell me they were at the park walking the dogs and Paul had just jogged past him and was up ahead of him running Abby across the field. He called me to say he could not believe how much energy Paul still had at the end of the day! After all that excercise, they came by the house to pick up some more shorts I had come across for Paul. He still did not appear to be as tired as we all felt. Amazing day............smile.

This morning he was again up and ready for Judy and asked if he could go straight to work so he could put in a longer day. Another great start, except that he walked out to Judy's car in his slippers - he had forgotten to put on his tennis shoes! The slippers are sort of like topsiders and look more like shoes than slippers, but I knew what they were and asked him if he really meant to head off to work in them. He looked down and laughed out loud when he saw what he had on. He said "Sweet St. Peter, what was I thinking of?" He stayed at work until 3:15 again. He said he had asked his boss, Richard out to lunch, but ended up getting treated to lunch. He said he had a really great time with Richard and enjoyed the time the 2 of them got to spend together. On my way home from work, I called Paul to see if he was eating at our house since Jerry has to work late on Tuesday's and he said no, he would wait for Jerry. I got home and moments later, Paul came walking into the house with Abby and said he needed to pack up his computer so that he could take it to Jerry's and set it up. He wanted his own computer to use and they were going to set up another desk in the room Jerry has as an office. He packed it up completely and was ready to load up Jon's car when he drove into the driveway. Jon walked in and Paul told him what needed to be done. I could see Jon was very tired and I asked Paul if he would mind waiting for just a bit so Jon could have some dinner. Paul said that would be fine, but as soon as Jon and I had finished, Paul stood up to go.

I can promise you this. Paul is really starting to take over in his life and we are so excited to see it. He has been going strong for weeks now and we are finally starting to believe it might just be the real beginning of some good progress toward recovery. Paul has had a few good days here and there, but never week after week! It's been incredibly awesome seeing him show some real determination to move forward. I just remembered this. On Monday, I dropped him off at Jerry's after picking him up from work and I asked him what he was going to do for the next 2 hours until Jerry got home. He said, "I will probably get my laundry done." With total shock in my voice I asked, "Really?!" He responded, "Yeah, why wouldn't I?" "Because you've rarely done it before!", I thought to myself. Later that evening, I asked him if he got his laundry done and he said, "No, because I want to wait til Jerry shows me how his machine works. It is his and I don't want to do anything that will wreck it." I'll let you know if he does do his own laundry. This inquiring mind wants to know!

Yes indeed, there is some California dreaming going on in our home!

Shelter us all in the shadow of your wings, Dear Lord.
Love,
Jon and Rebecca

Pictures That Tell the Story

The last night for card games

Half of the family waiting for the karaoke event
to begin. They had entertainment of their own - Little
Abigail was doing tricks on her scooter as she flew by them.

Marie - relaxing after dinner. It was wonderful seeing
her and Jon on this trip to the beach!

Paul stayed busy visiting with everyone after the
4th of July dinner. He is sitting between Aunt Bev
and Uncle Mike.

Jon, Abigail and Paul relax on the swing. Abigail looks
pretty cozy between 2 of the cousins who adore her!

Michael, Jon and James - Michael is having a grand
time!

Joseph and James - we always referred to them and
Michael Soignet as the 3 Musketeers. These 3 cousins
are about the same ages and are so much alike it is scary.
Joseph was home on a 2 week leave from the Army.
We were so blessed he was home during this time at
the beach. Michael is in Japan on a tour of duty with
the Marines. He was sorely missed.

Country western never sounded so..............well, bad.
But we all had so much fun watching the guys give it
a great effort. I have to say - they sounded a heck of a
lot better than most of the groups!

The Warmth of the Sun

PICTURES ARE POSTED BELOW!

I arrived at Topsail Island around 11 PM last Tuesday night and was greeted by all of my family. It was a long ride, but a great chance for me to have 7 hours of quiet time to listen to some of my favorite music and have plenty of time to talk to God. I prayed long and hard that Paul would continue to feel as well as he had so we could all enjoy this long awaited vacation.
Paul had waited up with everyone else and I was greeted with lots of hugs from them all.

The next morning, on the 4th of July, everyone relaxed and had breakfast together. There were 20 of us all together, and we were split between Mike and Mary Beth's house and the other house referred to as The Boat House, since that is where Mike's boat is docked. The houses are only few blocks away from each other so there was a lot a activity between them. That morning, there was a 4th of July parade that we were going to be a part of. The residents of the city of Topsail Island ride their bikes, scooters and golf carts along side of the walkers and they put on a mini parade for those people who are vacationing on the island for the 4th. They stand out on their decks and watch the 'parade' go by.

At 11 AM we all started to walk down to the street where the parade would begin and we noticed Paul was not with us. I started to go back to the house and I saw Paul jogging down the street with Abby dog. We all turned around and watched him come running to us. He ran with ease and was not even out of breath when he got to us. I was getting to enjoy Paul just like everyone else had been doing in the 2 days before I arrived. It was the first of many times my eyes would fill with tears as I watched Paul doing things I had dreamed of. He was having so much fun with his brothers, aunts and uncles and cousins. What change all this was since the summer before! What a fantastic blessing our family has received!

The rest of the day was spent with everyone splitting their time out on the boat, or swimming in the ocean. I was with my sisters and brother and Paul at the beach. He worked his way out into the surf, which was up to his waist at times and was able to keep his balance just fine. He had mentioned to his Aunt Kelly the day before that he had a problem with balance. She told him that his balance was not the problem, his eyesight was. He would not have been able to handle the waves otherwise. What he needed to do was to learn to adapt fully to having only one functioning eye at the time. Prayerfully, he will have the use of this left eye in time, but for now, he had to work with what he's got. And he has great balance.

Later in the day, Paul, Aunt Kelly, Uncle Keith and I took a very long walk down the beach to the point of the island. It was almost a 2 mile walk. Paul was searching for some sea shells he could give Abigail as a little surprise and he found what he was looking for. As we walked, we came upon a woman and her 2 yr old Lab. She was throwing a tennis ball out into the surf and he would chase out into the waves and leap over them to get to the ball. He would bring it back and wait with great anticipation as the woman would get ready to throw it again. Paul really enjoyed watching this and asked the woman if he could throw the ball. He threw it a few times and truly enjoyed this interaction with the dog. We then continued down the beach until we reached the point. The waves come in at a different direction since we reached the point where the ocean flows into the sound. We all stood watching the boats and jet skis come out to this area, turn around and head back into the sound. Then we started back and after walking a few feet, Paul looked down the beach and was shocked to see how far we had to walk back! He held up very well and did not have to stop to rest. It was early evening and we walked with the warmth of the sun on our backs.

That night, there was an island party at a house down the street from Mike and Mary Beth's house. Their friends roast a pig all day and in the evening they host a party for about 150 people. So many people asked us how Paul was doing and were so happy to see him there. They had heard from Mike and Mary Beth about the accident and through them, followed Paul's progress. It was fun to celebrate Paul's wellness with so many people. Later, my brother Keith brought out some cigars for the men and Paul asked Jon (brother) if he could try it too. I reminded him it may not make him feel very well and he said, "I know - I have had these before." ( We have a picture of Paul where he is on a sailboat with his Uncle Keith and it was taken the month before his accident. ) Paul enjoyed a few puffs of the cigar and then gave it back to Jon, but not before I got a picture of him with his Uncle Keith!

Later that night, everyone gathered around an area set up for karaoke. Earlier in the day, Keith showed the guys the song they would all sing that night. Paul practiced for about 5 minutes with Uncle Keith and so he was ready when their turn came up. Uncle Keith, Uncle Mike, Paul, Jon, James and Michael and my nephew Joseph and Uncle Joe got up to sing some country western song. It was another memorable moment for our families. Joseph was home on leave from his station in Germany. He was able to visit with the family before he leaves for Iraq in the Fall and so we were truly rejoicing at the sight of our men singing together! Once again, Paul stayed up until midnight. He and his brothers came back to the main house and played Texas Hold'em after the party. It really seemed more like old times for our family.

Jon and Marie left on Thursday morning very early. They were going to drive to New Hampshire to surprise her dad on his birthday. Paul was really sad to see them go and once they left, he went to bed. It was 11:45 AM and I had to wake him so he would not miss his 10 AM medicine completely. He was shocked he had slept so long and then said, "I was really tired and I had just wanted to push myself since Jon was here." I wondered if he would backslide now that Jon was gone. He got up and as we were taking Abby for a walk, he said that he wanted me to not expect him to be 'up' like this everyday. I asked him why not and he said he had worked really hard to do things with everyone, but he couldn't do it forever. I knew he was still really sad about Jon leaving, so I told him that we would take it day by day, but it would be really disappointing to see him go backward to where he was last Saturday. I told him that Jon really wanted him to visit them in Virginia and if he slid backwards, it would not happen. I encouraged him to keep struggling to make even better gains and if he could do it for 5 straight days, he could continue adding days. The choice was his. It was then I realized that some of his headache issue is more psychological than physical. He needed something to aim for in his recovery. What he perceives as recovery is too big a chunk for him. I explained to him that what he had accomplished in 5 days was so awesome and that he needed to set little goals ahead of him. Like taking over the job of his laundry for the next week. Then maybe he could add on little things like helping to cook dinner. Once we talked about 'bite-size' pieces of recovery, he seemed more upbeat about it. I told him that he had shown us all that he could travel well and could really take care of himself. That meant he could visit family and go on trips again. He started to talk about how much fun it would be to go see Jon and Marie. He also added that he would not travel anywhere if he had to leave his dog home for a long time! We know that one Paul!

The one highlight for me was the night we took a boat ride. Mike, Mary Beth, Joe, Bev, James, Paul, Shannon, Keith, Kelly and I went out on a little cruise in the early evening. We got out into the sound and Mary turned on some music. Paul was sitting in the front, up on the side of the boat and when the music started he came over to where I was sitting and he said, "I believe I owe you a dance." He said he missed getting to dance with me at Jon's wedding, so he was going to make up for it now. We had our dance after all. Yes, you can bet I had tears in my eyes at that moment. Mike took us up the sound and then we traveled to the intercoastal waterways and meandered through there for about an hour. At one point, he sped up to 45 miles per hour and the boat didn't hit down on the water hard at all. It is a deep sea fishing boat, so it cut through the water like a knife through butter. Paul was so thrilled with it all as he sat right up front! It was about the most fun thing we did on this trip. We were out on the boat for 2 hours! I also realized at this point that Paul had not mentioned a headache since I had gotten to Topsail Island. I had not thought of his medicine either. I only had to tend to his eye in the morning and the evening. Paul was pretty much on his own.

When I spoke to Jerry about it, he said he would not let Paul slide back into his old ways! As a surprise, he had the workout room ready when Paul got back. There was a TV and entertainment center set up with surround sound and there would be no excuses for Paul not to excercise! Paul was really happy to see this area completed and we will work to get him on a real schedule.

God blessed us with a healing this past week. We remain hopeful for a continuation of it.
I have to close now and get to my job, but I will post more pictures and tell more stories tomorrow! I hope this posting today brings joy to all of you, just as watching Paul this past week brought joy to our extended family.

May the warmth of the Son of God be with you today.
Love,
Jon and Rebecca

eye. He had fun in the surf though and
he wasn't knocked over once! Way
to hang in there Paul.

Michael came racing back to the
house as we were all leaving
to participate in the 4th of July
parade. The local residents
put on a parade for the visiting
crowds who come to the island for
the holiday.

Paul came running down the
street to catch up with all of
us as we walked to the
place where we were to meet
to be in the 4th of July parade.
